Ad revenue is getting harder and harder to obtain these days, and Matt Drudge, owner of the infamous DrudgeReport.com website, is no different. While DrudgeReport claims readership at almost 1 billion page views per month, if you don’t have advertising actually showing up on the website because of ad blockers, you aren’t making one thin dime.

So a website could have one trillion page views on their site, but if zero ads are showing up it won’t matter to the bottom line. DrudgeReport is probably seeing the decline in revenue and now has to resort to begging readers to unblock his ads just so he can revenue generate from all those massive page views.

Website ad revenue is taking huge hits due to ad blockers these days. The recent opening up to ad blockers from Apple with their Safari web browser was the death knell to many websites who relied on ads getting through on mobile and other platforms that Safari would not block. That, coupled with Facebook getting rid of clickbait headlines and newsy websites that have for years depended on Facebook for traffic to their news sites, have made publishing a real nightmare for sites who depend on ad revenue to keep their sits afloat.

Now, monster sites like Drudge are feeling the pain. Because when you have to beg your readers to whitelist them so ads will get through to them, that means you are feeling the financial losses hitting very close to home. And the reasons sites like Drudge exist are not because its a political cause related website for right wingnuts, its a business, and it relies heavily on making money, by in this case, the shock value he produces on headline titles and clickbait headlines and so forth. Traffic is a two way street. You beg for it, but when you get it you’d better hope you have ads getting hit, because if they aren’t getting hit, all the traffic in the world won’t make you any money if everyone is blocking your ads from getting through.

Tough times indeed..
