Donald Trump is no longer running against Hillary Clinton alone. He’s running against his own party. House Speaker Paul Ryan had the temerity to say that while he was not withdrawing support or his endorsement of Trump, he would no longer appear with Trump, defend him or campaign for him.


Trump now believes he has tacit permission to burn our representative democracy to the ground. Anyone who doesn’t think that is his intention is delusional. He’s already setting it up by declaring that Trump voters need to form their own Poll Watcher Vigilante Squads to monitor the polling places — especially in the inner cities — to ensure that “those people” don’t steal the election. Some aren’t even trying to beat around the bush.


The election is four weeks from today. Does anyone have a reasonable doubt that there will not be at least an attempt at fomenting insurrection after Trump loses?
