Ali Akbar has never managed to attract much mainstream notice, but he has good friends who have been in the news a lot lately.
- Rand Paul has been caught plagiarizing think tanks in his book and WikiPedia in his speeches. Last year, Senator Paul got the National Republican Senate Campaign to co-host Akbar’s Blog Bash party. He may also be the reason why Bill Murphy, Akbar’s partner in fake tea party nonprofits, got a job with the NRSC
- Ted Cruz attempted to single-handedly lead the country into default over Obamacare. Lately, we have learned that his father is a birther who denies evolution, which explains a great deal about the Senator’s mind. Cruz came to Akbar’s party last year to tell four dozen right wing nutjob bloggers that Washington is afraid of them
- Dan Backer recently argued McCutcheon, Republican National Committee v. FEC before the Supreme Court. He is likely to win, demolishing federal campaign contribution limits altogether and increasing the number of ways in which money monopolizes elections. In 2012, Backer called Walker v Kimberlin “the case of a lifetime” before a federal judge dismissed it with prejudice and told him never to return
Akbar is not a bug in the conservative project, but a feature of its design. He is a fraud among frauds, a lapdog of oligarchy, a magical-thinking “grassroots” conservative who has managed to be far more consequential and connected than he deserves.
