gun and constitution

South Carolina State Rep. Alan Clemmons (R-Horry) has proposed a law that would spend 3 weeks of classroom time on the 2nd Amendment using curriculum designed by the National Rifle Association, according to The State.

Under Clemmons’ proposal, the 2nd Amendment would be given its own classes for study outside of the normal history and civics class curriculum. South Carolina students on every grade level would spend a period every day for three weeks on the topic — but parents could “opt out” if they chose.

The bill also proposes the December 15th be named “Second Amendment Awareness Day.” The “holiday” would take place just one day after gunman Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree, murdering 20 children and six teachers at the Sandy Hook school. To celebrate the event, S.C. schools would offer an annual poster-and-essay contest called “The Right to Bear Arms: One American Right Protecting All Others.” Winners would compete statewide  and the contest would be judged by the Legislature’s Sportsmen’s Caucus.

Make no mistake — the event and the bill describing it are all about normalizing the ammosexual lifestyle and silencing gun sense. From local website The State:

Students would ponder what forefathers meant by “arms” – muskets or AR-15s? They would discuss the constitutionality of gun laws and “the underlying causes of gun violence, including mass shootings.”

The bill also would ban teachers from discouraging or punishing “political, written, or artistic expression that includes references to guns or a militia.”

Rather than home-grow the curriculum, Clemmons’ bill would require the gun-control-fighting National Rifle Association write or recommend the course content.

There are so many things wrong with this on so many levels. Why would you want to distract little kids from learning normal stuff like math with 3 weeks talking about guns? Why would you want to make “written speech” – which could easily include threats of violence — without scrutiny or  consequences? It also takes a special kind of evil to propose a “special day” to celebrate guns a day after the horrific Newtown tragedy.

Just in case you thought that maybe NRA shills aren’t so evil, Rep. Clemmons is a good reminder of how gratuitously thoughtless and callous they can be.

  1. Alan Clemmons has decided to mess with our kids. I am gonna fight and help others fight him and his radical agenda. He and the South Carolina Republican Party MUST BE STOPPED AT ALL COSTS!

  2. I do see the importance of gun safety for all ages but three weeks does seem a little strange. Most of the time when kids are testing twice a year it takes up almost a month, so with these three weeks imagine how much more things are going to be cut out of the curriculum.
