On Fox News Sunday today, perennial presidential aspirant Mike Huckabee pretended that he doesn’t understand how judicial review works:

“Presidents have understood that the Supreme Court cannot make a law, they cannot make it, the legislature has to make it, the executive branch has to sign it and enforce it,” Huckabee said. “And the notion that the Supreme Court comes up with the ruling and that automatically subjects the two other branches to following it defies everything there is about the three equal branches of government.”

“The Supreme Court is not the supreme branch,” he added. “And for God’s sake, it’s not the Supreme Being.”

Unfortunately for the civics-challenged Huckabee, the entire purpose of a federal judiciary is to tell the President and Congress when their laws are unconstitutional — for example, when they pass bigoted and discriminatory anti-gay laws like the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act.‘ That’s how the American system works and has always worked. But then Huckabee went on to pretend that the last fifteen years of history never happened, either:

Huckabee wondered what would happen if the Supreme Court ruled on “who was going to be the next president.”

“We would say, ‘Well, they can’t do that.’ Why can’t they do it? They can’t do it because it’s not in the law,” he opined. “We are sworn to uphold the Constitution and the law. And it has to be consistent and agreed upon with three branches of government. One can’t overrule the other two.”

Gee, don’t you wish you could take this Mike Huckabee backwards in time to address the Supreme Court before their Bush v Gore decision anointed President George W., inaugurating the unnecessary destruction of Iraq, making way for the ISIS caliphate to make the modern Middle East so interesting? (Huckabee also thinks the Islamic State and gay marriage are a “two-pronged attack” on America.) This interview performance is actually a sign of desperation for the culture warrior, whose monumental hypocrisies are finally being scrutinized in the way they deserve. By the end of last week, Huckabee was defending his child molester friend Josh Duggar against breaking revelations that he sexually assaulted four sisters and an unrelated juvenile female when he was 17.

“Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities,” Huckabee wrote in a post on Facebook. “No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things.”

[…] Huckabee and the Duggar family have long been close, and the former Arkansas governor has often praised the family for their Christian values. Photos of Duggar’s parents, Jim Bob and Michelle, and their endorsements of Huckabee for president are prominently featured on his campaign website; they still appeared on the homepage this afternoon. The Duggars endorsed and campaigned for Huckabee during his 2008 presidential campaign, as well.

Josh Duggar said last week he had met with Huckabee in Washington, tweeting a photo of himself with the candidate that Huckabee later shared with his own Twitter followers. “Great to visit w/ my friend @GovMikeHuckabee this morning in DC,” Duggar wrote. “Thankful to have his voice on the #2016 stage!”

Would Huckabee, or Josh’s friends at the homophobic hate group Family Research Council, display this much understanding and support if Josh came out as gay? Of course not, because the gays are “icky” whereas child molestation by straight, Jesus-loving people is totally forgivable according to Huckabee’s selective and self-serving reading of the Bible. (And now you know why Pastor Huckabee’s Southern Baptist Convention has a burgeoning child abuse problem that victims allege is at least as serious as the Catholic Church.)

Leave aside the fact that Jim Bob Duggar actually prevented police from interviewing Josh because he was running for public office. What’s really been discredited by this revelation is not the Duggar family’s piety, but their bigotry against gays and lesbians marrying beloved partners, a discrimination that Huckabee always justifies as ‘protecting the children.’ In the past, Huckabee has compared sexual orientation to pedophilia, polygamy, sadomasochism, necrophilia, incest, and drug use. He’s even advised Christian youth to avoid joining the military until a gay-hating president can take office. Just like the Duggars, there is no greater crime in Huckabee’s world than loving someone of the same gender as yourself.

Josh isn’t the first beneficiary of Huckabee’s power to forgive and forget even the most horrific non-gay crimes, either. Huckabee supports the Boy Scouts of America policy against gay scouts and leaders because he believes it protects boys from abuse. And Huckabee should know all about protecting Boy Scouts, because when he was Governor of Arkansas, the organization helped cover up his own 18 year-old son’s abuse and grisly murder of a stray dog so that his god could ‘forgive’ the poor young man properly. See how that works?

So whenever Mike Huckabee complains that ‘Christianity’ is being criminalized, what he’s actually complaining about is the lost cultural and political power of evangelical bigots like himself to ignore the actual crimes and misdemeanors committed by their friends while condemning the imaginary crimes that other people supposedly commit against their invisible sky-man. This sense of waning influence over the hearts and minds of Americans amid the growing acceptance of LGBTQs explains nearly 100% of Huckabee’s public policy stances these days; see his support of Indiana’s clever little discrimination law, for example. Lately, Huckabee has advised a ‘resistance’ strategy for anti-gay lawmakers, calling on them to ignore an expected Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality and impeach judges who rule against gay marriage bans. His sudden feigned ignorance of American Constitutional law covers a decidedly un-American obsession with policing other people’s lives — and reveals the true depth of his hypocrisy.

  1. Huck: “unforgivable”, as you use it, is a term best called a religious or moral concept. “Inexcusable” would be a legal term under the secular laws in the US. Most inexcusable is the action of the parents. And, I note you NEVER say anything about the girls who were attacked by this young man.
