It’s Thursday Threatcon, your intelligence briefing on right wing activity. Below are the best reports, investigations, exposées, and debunkery of the wingnutosphere this week. Due to Ted Cruz’s Iowa caucus win, our Threatcon Color Code is DOUCHECANOE BLUE

  • Mike Bickle, one of the many hard-right evangelical pastors who have endorsed Ted Cruz, blames the January East Coast blizzard on abortion
  • Forced-birth activist and mendacious video smear artist David Daleiden has turned down a plea bargain in Texas, where a grand jury recently charged him with filing for a false ID and attempting to buy fetal tissues. His attorney even had the gall to demand an apology. Sandra Merritt, Daleiden’s co-defendant, is being represented by the same organization that defended Kentucky’s anti-gay marriage clerk Kim Davis
  • In December, I warned you that a number of state legislatures would see ‘fetal remains’ bills popping up in response to Daleiden’s Planned Parenthood smear. Alabama Republicans are now sponsoring legislation that would ban research on fetal tissue, essentially prohibiting medical breakthroughs such as the polio vaccine from being developed in the Heart of Dixie. Alabama values!
  • State representative Ed Henry is introducing another 2,000-foot ‘buffer zone’ bill in an attempt to shutter the last remaining clinic providing abortions in northern Alabama
  • Everybody knows about the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer funds being used to provide abortions. But have you heard of the Helms Amendment, which prevents federal dollars from being used to provide abortions to war refugees so they can be forced to bear their rape babies?
  • Texas has closed more than eighty family planning clinics in recent years, but they haven’t expanded public benefits for all the low income women having more babies because the ‘right to life’ ends at birth
  • Ammon Bundy and fifteen other participants in the takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, including the four people still occupying the grounds of the federal facility, have been indicted by a grand jury for conspiracy to prevent federal Fish & Wildlife Service officials from carrying out their duties “by force, threats, and intimidation
  • I had assumed the FBI was able to set up a trap for the Bundy militants by listening to their cell phone signals, as none of the Malheur miscreants seems smart enough to use encryption apps. But indictee Shawna Cox believes that Ammon Bundy’s driver Mark McConnell turned coat and became a confidential informant. ‘Patriot’ blogs, pages, and email groups are boiling over with angry speculation
  • Victoria Sharp, a passenger in the truck that LaVoy Finicum drove just before he was shot dead by Oregon State Police, isn’t backing down from her claims that he was killed while surrendering — even though her version of events doesn’t track with video of the shooting. When she says that she’s willing to die “for the future of America,” the look in Sharp’s eyes reminds me of the Manson girls
  • Welfare rancher Cliven Bundy sent Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward a letter demanding that he expel federal officials and allow the Malheur squatters to stay. He also wanted other county officials to resign. Here is the official response from the Harney County government:

  • The near enemy: right wing domestic terrorists are more dangerous than the Islamic State
  • Michael Ramos of the ‘United States Patriot Army’ was arrested for constructing eight pipe bombs
  • Seventeen year-old ‘sovereign citizen’ Malachi Dorns was arrested in Athens, Georgia for giving a false name to a police officer after he was pulled over on a bicycle for yelling at vehicles and riding slowly in the left lane
  • The Drug Enforcement Agency admits there is no scientific evidence that wild rabbits are getting stoned on medical marijuana
  • America’s largest neo-Nazi organization appears to be undergoing a coup against its leader, with internal emails leaking while infighting rages
  • MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry narrowly escaped an attack during the Iowa caucuses
  • Latter-day John Bircher goofball Glenn Beck is reading Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind series to his terrified children and preparing to move his operations to Israel so he can be ready when the New World Order goon squad comes to shut his show down
  • Donald Trump’s white nationalist supporters are sticking with their candidate after his loss in Iowa
  • Harlem’s anti-gay ‘pastor’ James Manning is extremely unhappy that “the fags” want to buy his foreclosed church at auction and turn it into a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth, which he denounces as “a bathhouse”
  • Watch this Phoenix, Arizona police officer handle a ‘sovereign citizen’ who thinks he doesn’t have to register his RV and can block the whole street with it if he pleases:

  1. • I expect the Rs to break into the “But that’s different!” chorus about Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice’s emails any moment now.

    • I’ve long said any city that would pay for a venue for any professional sport is run by morons. It would do my poor old heart good to hear of some city’s—any city’s—mayor tell a professional sports league or team owner, “We are pleased you want to move a team here. We will assist you in finding an appropriate location and will work to expedite permits, but we will not contribute any public funds to build your stadium. Don’t like it? Find some other place to go.”

    • “Chutzpah” doesn’t begin to describe the attitude of David Daleiden and his attorney.

    • I will never understand fetus fetishists. I don’t want to.

    • The conspiracy theories about the death of LaVoy Finicum have only just begun to swirl. In six months, the Freeloader Militia Fan Club will be claiming Barack Obama personally shot Finicum and laughed.

    • The entire letter from Harney County to Cliven Bundy is funny, but it’s the last sentence that raises it to art.

    • I get the feeling James Manning would be willing to burn his church to the ground rather than let an unworthy group purchase it. I hope I’m wrong.
